How to choose a wheel ?
A practical solution is to choose a wheel whose diameter is the same as that of the bicycle wheel. Not only does it show an aesthetic harmony but in case of failure it makes it possible to replace a damaged wheel element (or the whole front wheel) with that from the trailer. The trailer may be left until help is organised or, in many a case, it may be towed on the damaged wheel, being considerably less burdened than the bicycle, or it may be taken on one’s back.
If the wheels are of different dimensions, actually no difference is felt in respect of the perfect running properties of the bicycle – trailer set. However, for the sake of little rolling resistance, the most frequent choice is diameter 28” (or slightly larger, 27”).
Extrawheel trailers are available with an all-use frame of one dimension, with only the wheel dimension changing. The related differences in the height of luggage suspension are tiny, more or less 3 cm. Because of where the centre of gravity of luggage is placed, a 26” wheel makes the Extrawheel ride in a slightly more stable manner.
Presently, trailers are equipped with wheels consisting of aluminium rims and medium-thickness tyres assembled for us by the
IB
company, which is a manufacturer of bicycles located in Nowy Targ (Poland).
Selection of nuts
Wheels in
most bicycles produced nowadays are fixed with quick release locks. It is not a problem to replace the locks on rear wheels with an Extrawheel all-purpose (175 mm) joint quick
release lock.
However, in case of many bicycles wheels are fastened with nuts (whose joint-like equivalents are offered by us), with four types of threads available:
3/8 inch, 24 coils/inch
M10x1
13/32 inch, 26 coils/inch
3/8 inch, 26 coils/inch
The latter type (3/8”/26) fits the vast majority of bicycles available on our market and it is typically attached in the set trailer-fastening-nuts. Should a wheel be fixed with nuts of a different thread, we would suggest buying the threads of the other dimensions together with the trailer, especially when there is doubt about it. We would like to note that if the nuts are ordered separately, the cost of international shipment will exceed the value of the nuts by several times.
The construction of some
gears built-in in bicycle rear hub
makes it impossible to fix our nuts or quick release lock in the wheel axis. In this case, the fastening fork may by hung on joint nuts taken from two quick release locks (thread M 5), for example in the place where the luggage carrier is normally fastened. Then, it is necessary to buy a set of trailer and quick release lock with an additional quick release lock
